Narrative
The narrative is that Ocean (Clooney) is a experienced thief, he chooses to rob a casino knowing full well that it is a very difficult task ahead but not impossible. We are given the impression here, that he deliberately takes on these impossible tasks, just for the mere challenge. So he gathers up a team to help him rob a casino hence the name Oceans 11.
Location
The movie is set in Las Vegas where Ocean intends to rob a casino owned by Benedict.
The Opening
The opening title begins with showing a room with an empty chair and George Clooney comes and sits down, a mid-shot angle is taken and we can hear he is being asked questions, we find out George Clooney’s characters name is Daniel Ocean. Next we learn that Ocean is in jail and there is a trial taking place to see if he will be released. We still don’t know what crime he has committed. And then at 1 minute and 36 seconds into the opening, music plays over the scene, in the style of representing something deceitful. Then he is asked ‘what will you do if you get out’? Then an extreme close up is taken of his face only with the music still going on. The next scene shows us he is being escorted out with a jail guard. We then see him walking for another 5 seconds and the scene cuts to seeing only his hand at an extreme close-up. He is holding an envelope with a wedding ring inside which he takes out, at this point the camera moves slowly up to his face, while the camera is moving we see him dressed in a suit. The camera then cuts to a medium shot showing the rest of him wearing a suit while he is quite happy look at the ring.
Diegetic
The diegetic sounds are of the casino and the slot machines giving the atmosphere of gambling, a sense to go in and have a go to win your millions.
Non Diegetic
Non diegetic sounds are of the Oceans 11 theme tune.
Narrative Enigma
The narrative enigma is, will they be able to rob the casino without getting caught?
Fact
Also in this movie everyone has one question for Ocean ‘your wife looks like Julia Roberts?’ The director made Roberts character quite a challenge because she had to act as if she wasn’t Julia Roberts.
