Narrative
Sin City is four narratives inter-weaved telling tales of corruption in Basin City. The first narrative is ‘The Customer is always right’, it is short, and is based on the depression of a woman, she has paid a man to feel loved when she commits suicide. The next narrative is Part 1 of “That Yellow Bastard” about a cop who needs to save a young girl from being raped. The third narrative ‘The Hard Goodbye’ features a man taking revenge on a heartless killer who murdered his one-night stand. The fourth narrative ‘The Big, Fat Kill’, which stars a man who must dispatch a cop's body, but it will be a tough job to do.
The Opening
The opening shows a whole city in black and white and only the woman’s dress is shown in colour, her back is turned from the camera. We see her walking on her balcony until she is just standing there all alone, whilst the voice of a man is narrating about the woman. In the next frame we see her face; the shot is a mid shot. We also see a man behind her walking towards the woman, the man is offering her a smoke and we find out that he is actually narrating, she turns around, the camera follows her and the shot turns into a shoulder reverse shoulder shot. She agrees to take the cigarette and the camera only films his and her hands. They start talking, he flirts with her; he starts to comment on her eyes and what colour they are and we see them changing from a dull shade to an emerald green which then change back. She turns around after he has lit the cigarette, he tells her she has to ‘face something’ and she replies back saying she ‘doesn’t want to face it alone’.
Diegetic
The diegetic sounds are of police sirens.
Non Diegetic
The non diegetic music is of a slow cool saxophone in the first narrative 'The customer is always right'.
Narrative Enigma
The narrative enigma is why does the guy kill the girl, will the cop save the girl in time, will the guy take his revenge for his one night stand lover and will he be able to dispose of the body without getting caught.
