Narrative

The narrative is about Sophie and Howl, Sophie is an ordinary hat maker and she gets cursed by an evil witch and she goes to Howls castle for help and Howl is a wizard that is very good at doing magic and he has 4 different identities to keep the different cities at peace but it goes wrong and he has to try to stop a war.

The Opening

The opening titles show heavy thick fog and we can hear something machine-like moving inside the fog, we see the camera taking different shots of what looks like a machine then when the fog clears up we see luscious green calm country-side and the rest of the machine moving up hill. The camera slowly moves up into the sky which then the title of the movie appears in yellow writing, then the camera goes back down and we see the houses of the city and a train track with a train coming in to the scene. The shot cuts to a window and then cuts to a young adolescent girl sewing, her back is turned from the camera, the next shot is taken over her shoulder to see what she is doing, she is sewing a hat and we can only see the hat and her hands sewing the hat. After this shot a young woman comes and asks Sophie (the young girl, we initially see), if she wants to go out with girls to a party. Sophie refuses the offer and decides to finish the hat and lock up the hat shop.

Narrative Enigma

The narrative enigma is, will Sophie ever get rid of the curse and how will Howl stop the war.

Diegetic

The diegetic sounds are of the castle moving and the sound of the train moving.

Non Diegetic

The non diegetic sounds are of the calm piano played at the beginning when introducing the title of the movie.
